Working with the geriatric population may occur in outpatient clinics, hospitals, home health, and senior centers; however, skilled nursing and long-term care facilities are often the settings associated with aging individuals. Skilled nursing and long-term care facilities have a large occupational therapy presence to assist the elderly with regaining and maintaining independence in bathing, dressing, feeding, toileting, functional mobility, cooking, leisure activities, and safety. In this setting, there are often areas of overlap with other therapeutic disciplines, such as physical therapy and speech language pathology (Washkowiak et al, n.d.)
